Who is Fred Wilmot?

Fred is; a bit grumpy, a bit outspoken, and sometimes even a bit funny.

Today Stories

There is a bit of information due to go here, but been a delay.

and a few notes:

This is a free 'news' website for Freds views, opinions, moans and observations.

The Court System

I have recently come across the Civil Court System, in which it appears that anyone can bring a case against anyone for anything - and it is up to the one on the defending end to prove themselves innocent, and if they don't respond, judgement can be passed against them!

I struggle to come up with a solution to this, as any solution is likely to have the effect of making the legal system less accessable for 'every day' people.

I'm not aware of it at least, but surely there should be extremely stiff penalties for anyone who takes a completely unfounded case to court (I'm not simply talking about losing a case on a 'technicality', but rather losing a case due to there being no case to answer at all!)

There are costs that can be awarded if it is ruled that the case was 'unreasonable', but these costs are not likely to cover much more than costs incurred as opposed to the stress and 'internal' damage caused by the unreasonable behaviour of the plaintiff in taking the case to court.

Rubbish Drivers... Grrr!

I know that everyone moans about everyone else, but when it comes to driving, there are countless numpties out there who simply shouldn't be on the roads.

For example, I saw a middle aged lady driving a car with 'P' plates on it suggesting that she had recently passed her driving test. She was driving at approximately HALF of the speed limit!

She could simply not have passed her driving test recently if she drove anything at all like that! Such speed belongs to your very first driving lessons as opposed to any sort of real life. And if such speeds (and arguably incompetence) were to be performed on a driving lesson, then the roads that I saw her driving on in Coventry would not have been suitable!

Why do people assume that they have a right to drive - in fact surely all rights would be better phrased as 'responsibilities' as opposed to something that is about 'give me' and 'what can I get/' as opposed to 'what can I give?', but that's a different story altogether.

More police, stricter penalties on the UK roads should lead to people becoming more interested in driving well - after all, most people don't care unless they have something to lose!

The Points System for Drivers

Is the points system in UK law a good idea? Does it really help, or are the points simply an excuse to get the admin money from car drivers?

The number of people driving on the roads today with at least 3 points on their driving licence is massive. If you ask anyone if they or someone in their family has points - chances are that they will. This arguement (the fact that nearly 'everyone' has a penalty on their driving licence) is sometimes used against the case for having this system.

Although I would hate to have points (I don't have any yet!) I still think that it is probably a good idea. The more points that someone receives, the more careful they should be. Although I have some sympathy for anyone who 'accidentally' gets 3 points as a 'one off', but those who repeatedly get points are simply unaware of either safety or just driving unaware - or surely they would have seen the camera!

At this point many (who have points) would say that it is more important to be concentrating on road or people or cars, as opposed to looking for cameras - but surely if you have your eyes open looking for 'anything' you would notice a big yellow camera or a van with a 2ft tall picture of a camera on it!

Although I have no desire to see anyone lose their licence - I, equally, see that they have little arguement in their defence.

The Price of Driving Lessons

How much!? 25 pounds an hour!

Driving lessons are getting more expensive every year. When I was learning to drive I am sure that lessons cost somewhere in the region of 13 pounds per hour. Now the price is much higher and reportedly the number of hours required to pass is getting higher too! (Sorry for all of the exclamation marks!)

It seems to me that a big part of the problem is national driving schools or big franchises. These people get a significant cut of the hourly price - either by percentage of simply by default. Driving instructors are having to pay them money and therefore having to charge more. I am sure that there were nowhere near as many driving instructors working for big driving school when I was learning.

I know that costs have gone up for everyone, instructors included, but it just seems to me that big companies do not really seem to help matters. If you use a company like the one below, you can compare the prices from different instructors and schools, then choose which ever one you like for your lessons, whether it be one of these or not. For driving lessons in Aylesford, Maidstone or Dudley driving schools, you can go straight to the relevant pages.

Getting driving lessons in Dudley for example (according to Google) gives literally hundreds of options!

Talking About Choosing

I am looking forward to the election results tomorrow!
